Abstract

This paper presents an overview of the past 50 years of the Petroleum Exploration Society of Australia (PESA). PESA is a not-for-profit professional association for individuals involved in the oil and gas exploration industry.

Keywords: geoscience, oil and gas, Petroleum Exploration Society of Australia, professional development.

John Begg is a petroleum geologist by trade who enjoys his sport but thinks the great game is getting wells drilled to test good ideas. He’s been at it since late 1979 and so far has been involved in the discovery and commercialisation of oil and gas fields on three continents. These days, although still ‘hands on’, he likes to create new companies to test those good ideas, adding value via the drill bit. He is a proud member of an industry that in his view, strives earnestly to meet ever higher standards as it responds to the energy requirements of the public. John is a long time member, mostly continuously, of AAPG, PESA and SEAPEX.
