RD21324Cryoprotective effect of antifreeze protein III on the rabbit ovary

Qin Zeng 0000-0002-5993-628X, Kai Wang, Li-Bin He, Ting-Ting Wang, Xue-Mei Fan and Wei-Xin Liu
pp. 645-657
Graphical Abstract Image

Fertility preservation for women of reproductive age with cancer is considered as one of the important goals for tumour treatment. Ovarian cryopreservation and transplantation is one of methods for fertility preservation, and it has been successfully applied in humans and mammals, with either the ovarian cortex or the whole ovary with its vascular pedicle cryopreserved. In this study, we investigated whether antifreeze protein III could improve the follicular integrity of frozen whole rabbit ovaries.

RD21245Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor delta-PPARδ agonist (L-165041) enhances bovine embryo survival and post vitrification viability

Jesús Alfonso Sánchez Viafara 0000-0001-7527-3300, Gisvani Lopes de Vasconcelos, Renata Maculan, Nadja Gomes Alves, Marcos Brandao Dias Ferreira, Mateus José Sudano 0000-0002-7699-4449, Gisele Zoccal Mingoti 0000-0002-3059-4458, Giovana Barros Nunes, Renato Ribeiro de Lima, Roberti Martins Drumond, Raphael Nunes dos Santos, Marcos Nogueira Eberlin, Fernanda Negrão, Jasmin, Mariana Aragão M. Donato, Christina A. Peixoto and José Camisão de Souza
pp. 658-668
Graphical Abstract Image

Research in to laboratory bovine embryo production is important because it leads to more viable embryos being produced. This technique has low efficiency compared to embryos produced naturally, because embryos get damaged. This study sought to minimise damage through the use of a molecule (peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor delta-PPARδ agonist L165041) in the culture medium. It was observed that the developmental viability and survival after freezing were increased for embryos cultured with the PPARδ-agonist compared to controls. Laboratories may add this molecule to improve their embryo culture results.

RD21234Effects of mobile phone use on semen parameters: a cross-sectional study of 1634 men in China

Shanshan Zhang, Fengyi Mo, Yali Chang, Shufang Wu, Qing Ma, Fan Jin and Lanfeng Xing 0000-0001-6274-3828
pp. 669-678
Graphical Abstract Image

The radiofrequency electromagnetic radiation produced by mobile phones has caused increasing concern. We studied effects of different aspects of mobile phone use on semen parameters in 1634 men, demonstrating the daily duration of mobile phone use may negatively affect sperm motility. Therefore, men of reproductive age were recommended to avoid using mobile phones for long periods of time.

RD21355Assessment of sperm mitochondrial activity by flow cytometry and fluorescent microscopy: a comparative study of mitochondrial fluorescent probes in bovine spermatozoa

Marc Llavanera 0000-0003-0685-7534, Beatrice Mislei, Olga Blanco-Prieto, Vito Antonio Baldassarro, Yentel Mateo-Otero, Marcella Spinaci, Marc Yeste 0000-0002-2209-340X and Diego Bucci
pp. 679-688
Graphical Abstract Image

Mitochondrial probes (DiOC6(3), JC-1 and MitoTracker Deep Red) are specific for sperm mitochondria and can be simultaneously co-stained with a viability marker. DiOC6(3) and JC-1, but not MitoTracker Deep Red, can monitor mitochondrial activity. However, JC-1 was found to be more sensitive to mitochondrial membrane potential changes than DiOC6(3).

RD21239Transcriptome analyses of potential regulators of pre- and post-ovulatory follicles in the pigeon (Columba livia)

Lizhi Lu, Long Zhang, Tao Zeng, Xue Du, Zhengrong Tao, Guoqin Li, Shengliang Zhong, Jihui Wen, Caiquan Zhou and Xiaoqin Xu 0000-0003-1745-5215
pp. 689-697
Graphical Abstract Image

Here, we used RNA-seq to explore the gene expression profiles of pre- and postovulatory follicles of pigeons. Finally, we found the DGEs in ECM (extracellular matrix)–receptor interaction pathway, progesterone-mediated oocyte maturation pathway, vascular smooth muscle contraction closely related to promoting follicular maturation and ovulation in pre-ovulatory follicles. Moreover, it seems that the lysosomal cathepsin family has a decisive role in the regression of early post-ovulatory follicles.
