Abstract

Field examples of four processes that control the formation of magnetite in rocks are discussed here. Oxygen fugacity conditions, original chemistry, and metamorphic grade are examined for mafic volcanic sequences. Sedimentary facies change within an iron formation is studied. In all the cases the understanding of the cause of the presence or absence of magnetite greatly improved the effectiveness of using magnetic data for geological mapping purposes.
