Graphical Abstract Image

In intramolecular reactions of benzene derivatives with alkenes, meta or [2 + 3] photocycloadditions take place in competition with ortho or [2 + 2] additions and complex structures are obtained. The substitution pattern and the spin multiplicity significantly affect the competition between the two reaction modes. A topological analysis facilitates the application these photoreactions to target oriented synthesis.

CH23015Nonlinear optics: from theory to applications, with a focus on the use of two-photon absorption in biology

Mélanie Dréano, Olivier Mongin 0000-0002-7743-9623, Frédéric Paul 0000-0002-8256-0129 and Mark G. Humphrey 0000-0002-4433-6783
pp. 130-149
Graphical Abstract Image

Two-photon absorption (2PA) offers several advantages for bio-oriented applications, such as intrinsic three-dimensional resolution and increased penetration depth in biological materials such as tissue. The essential background theory needed for an understanding of 2PA is described, the key experiments to quantify 2PA merit and molecular design to optimise material performance are discussed and the existing challenges in the use of 2PA in imaging, therapy and theranostics are reviewed.

CH22223Advances in high abundance protein molecular imprinting techniques in human serum

Zhipeng Liu, Aijun Gong 0000-0002-6261-1013, Lina Qiu, Yang Liu, Shujia Zheng, Wenyan Qin and RongRong Fan
pp. 150-168
Graphical Abstract Image

The overview and progress of the selection of substrate and template, immobilization methods and thickness controlling strategy in surface imprinting is emphasized. Furthermore, immobilization methods such as ligand, metal ion, covalent interaction and physical adsorption are introduced.

CH23013Chemical constituents of lawang root oil

Neanne Alnafta, Marlowe Graham, Nicholas W. Proschogo 0000-0001-8729-9874 and Christopher S. P. McErlean 0000-0001-8930-7495
pp. 169-172
Graphical Abstract Image

Lawang oil is a traditional medicine that is applied topically to reduce soreness associated with swollen joints. Spectroscopic analysis of commercial root-derived lawang oil identified methyl salicylate as the major component. This contrasts with the previous studies on the composition of bark-derived lawang oil.
