Cannabis and Cannabinoids

Guest Editors:
Peter J. Duggan (CSIRO and College of Science and Engineering, Flinders University)
Michael Kassiou (School of Chemistry, The University of Sydney)
Graphical Abstract Image

Cannabis produces unique compounds with novel biological activity. We describe cannabis phytochemistry relative to neuroprotective properties through anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory actions and via inhibiting aggregation of misfolded neurotoxic proteins such as amyloid β in Alzheimer’s disease. Such emergent phytocannabinoid research may afford new leads in the treatment of dementia.

CH21007Imaging Cannabinoid Receptors: A Brief Collection of Covalent and Fluorescent Probes for CB1 and CB2 Receptors

Alexander J. Hamilton, Alan D. Payne, Mauro Mocerino and Hendra Gunosewoyo 0000-0003-3897-1948
pp. 416-432
Graphical Abstract Image

A review of known molecular probes for imaging cannabinoid type 1 and type 2 receptors. Electrophilic, photoactivatable and fluorescent moieties are tagged to a range of established cannabinoids, ranging from the phytocannabinoids to the endocannabinoids and synthetic cannabimimetics.

CH20263Development of Chromenopyrazole-Based Selective Cannabinoid 2 Receptor Agonists

Sameek Singh, Ian Liddle, Christa Macdonald, Joel D. A. Tyndall, Michelle Glass and Andrea J. Vernall 0000-0001-8056-0726
pp. 433-442
Graphical Abstract Image

Compounds that bind to and activate cannabinoid receptors are typically very lipophilic. We have developed a series of more polar ligands that are high-affinity, selective cannabinoid type 2 receptor activators. These ligands will be useful tools to probe cannabinoid receptor function and location.

CH20247Preliminary Investigation of a Novel 18F Radiopharmaceutical for Imaging CB2 Receptors in a SOD Mouse Model

Giancarlo Pascali 0000-0001-7919-8416, Daniele Panetta, Mariarosaria De Simone, Silvia Burchielli, Valentina Lucchesi, Elena Sanguinetti, Simone Zanoni, Patricia Iozzo, Giuseppe Saccomanni, Clementina Manera and Piero A. Salvadori
pp. 443-452
Graphical Abstract Image

A novel prospective CB2 receptor ligand has been labelled with 18F and tested in microPET imaging of SOD1 mouse models. Image analysis revealed a fast washout from brain regions. A significant increase of distribution volume was noticed between symptomatic and asymptomatic subjects.

CH21033Untargeted Metabolomic Analyses Reveal Chemical Complexity of Dioecious Cannabis Flowers

Matthew T. Welling 0000-0002-5551-1073, Myrna A. Deseo, Antony Bacic and Monika S. Doblin
pp. 463-479
Graphical Abstract Image

Metabolic variation between male and female unisexual flowers of the plant genus Cannabis was examined by liquid chromatography–high-resolution mass spectrometry. In addition to variation in phytocannabinoid concentration, untargeted metabolic analyses revealed several differentially abundant metabolites associated with sexual phenotype.

CH21001Medicinal Cannabis – The Green Fairy Phenomenon

Onyekachi Raymond 0000-0001-7880-8542, Mary Jane McCarthy 0000-0003-2719-0003, Jess Baker and Helen Poulsen 0000-0002-8877-3109
pp. 480-494
Graphical Abstract Image

The lack of access to affordable and legally available medicinal cannabis products in New Zealand has driven the development of an active illegal market by a well intentioned network of so called ‘Green Fairies’. While indicated for a range of complaints and diseases, the lack of quality control on these products creates safety concerns that we have investigated and reported.
