Abstract

The infusion of new technology into the offshore industry has resulted in the introduction of many types and variations of new diving systems. In addition to conventional hyperbaric manned diving and manned submarines, these include atmospheric diving suits, tethered remotely controlled submersibles, one atmosphere diving bells with manipulators and a variety of remotely controlled subsea tools.

This paper reviews the current status of such systems, describes operating experiences with typical systems, and suggests criteria for selection of preferred systems. Areas of usage include exploratory drilling, field construction and development, survey, and inspection and maintenance.
