Abstract
The start and spread of a forest fire are strongly conditioned by the past and present meteorological situation. The interacting weather parameters determine a fire hazard which may be estimated using various indices. Among those used for the French Mediterranean region, the index 185, formulated by the author in 1985, and further successively improved (187,185/90), has proven to be very efficient.
