Abstract

The dolichopodid subfamily Sympycninae in Australia is briefly reviewed. The genus Yumbera is newly described and comprises Y. callida (Parent) and four new species, Y. signata, Y. nudicornis, Y, athertonia and Y. conica. It is confined to moist eastern Australian forests from the Cairns district, northern Queensland, to Victoria. Phylogenetic and zoogeographic analyses are presented; these suggest that current species distributions reflect past differentiation and fragmentation of Australian mesic forests.
