Fostering employee and community engagement through diversity, equity, and inclusion strategic goals

Abstract
As an energy technology company, our success is deeply linked with the creativity and engagement of our people. At Baker Hughes, we foster this through working to build a diverse, equitable, and inclusive work environment where everyone can bring their authentic selves and talents. A focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) is increasingly prioritised among the investor community and is a critical component of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) work. At a global level, Baker Hughes has four strategic DEI goals that guide us on our DEI journey: Diverse Workforce, Inclusive Culture, Supplier Diversity, and Customer and Community. This paper reviews how these strategic goals are being actioned in Australia through our community engagement, industry collaboration, multicultural education, and employee resource groups. These actions have supported employees through the challenges of 2020, boosted morale, empowered teamwork, and enhanced relationships with our peers. These initiatives include environmental volunteering, coding for kids STEM events, an internal ‘culture shock’ series, and targeted donations following recent bushfires. These and other initiatives can be shared and scaled across companies or industries.

Jeremy Campbell-Wray is a Strategic Account Director at Baker Hughes supporting global operations for Woodside, Santos, INPEX and Chevron Asia Pacific. His role encompasses technical, commercial, business development, and project management disciplines. His experience and operations background allow him a comprehensive understanding of the entire Upstream Oil and Gas industry. Additionally, he leads the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Council of Baker Hughes Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea, supporting seven Employee Resource Groups (ERG’s), and also leads their Pride@Work ERG across Asia Pacific. He’s held senior roles in non-profit organisations such as Pride WA where he served as President. He received a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Pennsylvania State University and has been working in the Energy and Resources Industry for nearly 20 years. |
Nicole M. Durham is the Chief Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Officer of Baker Hughes. In this role, she is responsible for the company’s global diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) journey. She joined the company in March 2021. Durham brings more than 20 years’ experience building strong client relationships, collaborating cross-functionally, and leading change to achieve business results. She is a trusted partner to senior leadership teams, creating and driving strategies supporting talent management, leadership development, and employee relations. Most recently, Durham was Vice President of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at Exelon Corporation. Throughout her time at Exelon, Durham served as a strategic advisor to senior leadership, diversity and inclusion councils, and employee resource groups. Before joining Exelon in 2004, Nicole practiced technology risk consulting at Protiviti, Inc. and Arthur Andersen, LLP in Chicago. Durham holds a Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Notre Dame as well as a graduate certificate in Learning and Organisational Change from Northwestern University. She has a professional in human resources (PHR) certification and a certified information systems auditor (CISA) designation. |
