pp. 1-20

Recent molecular studies of Prostanthera (Lamiaceae) showed a close evolutionary relationship among P. phylicifolia s. str., the critically endangered P. gilesii and a population of uncertain identity from New South Wales. In this study, analyses of genomic and morphological data identified the presence of three discrete entities that warrant specific recognition. A new species of immediate and critical conservation concern is identified, and methods for conservation are reviewed.

SB21037Areas of endemism and environmental heterogeneity: a case study in Mexican legumes

Maribel Arenas-Navarro 0000-0003-3540-8041, Tania Escalante, César Miguel-Talonia, Ana Silva-Galicia and Oswaldo Téllez-Valdés 0000-0002-7449-378X
pp. 21-37

Mexico hosts a high diversity of legumes, with a high diversity of life forms. Identifying the areas of endemism, characterising their environmental characteristics and examining the conservations status are essential conservation efforts. Our study identified six general areas, primarily in mountain complexes in the Neotropical region. Areas of endemism with a higher endemicity index have more environmental heterogeneity. We found that legume species lack legal protection in Mexico, 69% of the endemic species do not have an evaluation category according to the IUCN, and eight species are in some risk category. Legumes should be considered a key group for biogeographic and conservation studies in Mexico.
