Aquatic ecosystems are crucial for maintaining global water resources, encompassing freshwater systems such as rivers, lakes, wetlands, and estuaries that provide essential services such as water purification, flood control, and habitats for diverse species. With a growing global population and escalating climate change, the sustainable management of these freshwater ecosystems is increasingly vital. Freshwater ecosystems not only support biodiversity but also ensure water quality and reliability for human use.
To effectively manage these freshwater ecosystems, a comprehensive approach is needed to address challenges including sustainable water quantity and quality, ecosystem health, resilience, and socio-economic considerations. Specialized methodologies such as environmental flow assessments, pollution control, habitat restoration, and biodiversity monitoring are particularly crucial.
However, freshwater ecosystems face significant threats from pollution, habitat degradation, overexploitation, and climate change. This includes challenges related to the protection of non-renewable freshwater resources and eutrophication. Strategies for managing and protecting groundwater or freshwater lakes, addressing risks of depletion or overexploitation, and measures to reduce nutrient inputs are essential to counteract these threats.
Our collection "Global Perspectives: Sustainable Management of Freshwater Aquatic Ecosystem Services and Water Resources" aims to address these pressing issues.
By facilitating discussions among experts and stakeholders, we seek to exchange innovative ideas and develop practical solutions to enhance global efforts in the sustainable management and conservation of freshwater resources.
This collection will cover topics including environmental flow assessments, pollution control measures, habitat restoration, biodiversity monitoring, climate change impacts, integrated water resource management, and ecosystem services assessment in freshwater systems. Contributions are expected from the 7th International Symposium on Water Resource and Environmental Management (WREM2024) and other external expert authors.
We invite researchers and practitioners to actively contribute their insights and findings to advance effective practices for the sustainable management of freshwater aquatic ecosystems and water resources globally. Authors interested in participating are encouraged to submit their manuscripts according to the outlined themes and scope.
Submission Deadline: December 31, 2024
