Histological changes in the ovaries of the golden perch, Plectroplites ambiguus, associated with the reproductive cycle

Abstract

Histological changes in the ovary are described. P. ambiguus requires the stimulus of a flood to trigger spawning. If a flood fails to occur, yolky oocytes become atretic and their contents are resorbed. New vitellogenesis commences immediately after spawning or in May-June if spawning fails to occur, and continues throughout the winter months. The possible significance of the unusual ovarian cycle of this species is discussed.
