Abstract
Since the H5N1 virus first appeared in China in 1996, it has undergone dramatic evolution, both genetically and in its biological properties. This article discusses the evolution of H5N1 and the paradigm shift that has occurred in our understanding of the ecology and biology of avian influenza viruses as a result of the H5N1 experience.https://doi.org/10.1071/MA06169
