Sharing and Permissions

CSIRO Publishing disseminates scientific research and information through the publication of journals, books and magazines. Our publishing activities aim to further international scientific communication and deliver the greatest possible impact to the Australian and global community.

We offer options to enable individuals, publishers, institutions and commercial organisations worldwide to reuse or republish material with the appropriate permission and consent.

All material published by CSIRO Publishing is protected under copyright and intellectual property laws. Unless otherwise stated permission in writing is required to reproduce any material.

Content marked as Open Access is copyright and made available under a Creative Commons Licence. The terms of use will vary depending on the Creative Commons Licence nominated by the author, found at the link where the Open Access material appears.

Authors reusing material

Details about reusing your own material form part of your ‘Licence to Publish’ agreement, signed when you submitted your paper for publication.

In general, unless alternate conditions apply, you do not need permission from CSIRO Publishing to reuse your own material in further work.  The material must always be clearly attributed. As well as retaining moral rights you are permitted to:

  • Use copies of the work for non-commercial purposes within your institution subject to the usual copyright licencing agency arrangements
  • Use the work for further research and presentations at meetings and conferences
  • Use the illustrations (line art, photographs, figures, plates) and research data in your own future works
  • Share print or digital copies of your work with colleagues for personal use or study
  • Include the work in part or in full in a thesis provided it is not published for commercial gain
  • Place your pre-publication version of the work on a pre-print server
  • Place your pre-publication version of the work on a personal website or institutional repository on condition that there is a link to the definitive version on the CSIRO Publishing website.

Author sharing guidelines

Sharing responsibly according to the licence terms of your article means we can continue to publish and serve the research community. Our journal article sharing policy aligns with the STM Association’s Voluntary principles for article sharing on scholarly collaboration networks.

Depending on the licence under which your content was published, different sharing policies will apply. For journal articles published under an Open Access licence, the published version of record can be shared immediately without embargo.

Where required by funders or the authors’ institution, authors retain the right to distribute their accepted manuscript (AM),  such as via an institutional and/or subject repository, under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0) licence immediately on acceptance.

Articles published as part of a subscription based model (not published as Gold Open Access) are subject to the following sharing conditions. Linking to the Final Version of Record on the CSIRO Publishing website is always preferred, for use of the correct version of record, and accurate citation tracking.

Final Version of Record: peer-reviewed, publisher edited, typeset version of record.

  • Authors can share a link to the article on the journal's website
  • Authors can share the published version of the article within their private research group or collaboration, or use it as part of a grant application, thesis or doctorate

Accepted manuscripts: author-created, peer-reviewed, accepted manuscript, before editing and typesetting.

  • The Accepted version of an article is the only version that may be uploaded to Scholarly Collaboration Networks such as ResearchGate and Academia.
  • The Publisher's edited or typeset versions cannot be used unless it is published as Gold Open Access.
  • The Accepted version may be uploaded into an institutional repository or put on a personal non-commercial website, with no embargo.
  • The institutional repository should be that of the institution employing the author at the time the work was conducted or PubMed Central.

Submitted manuscripts: the author-created manuscript before peer review.

  • Submitted manuscripts before peer-review and acceptance by the publisher can be shared anywhere, including scholarly collaboration networks.
  • We encourage authors to add a link to the published version using its DOI on acceptance to encourage usage and citation of the version of record.

Permissions

Permission is required to reproduce all copyright material including text extracts, figures, tables, photos and illustrations. CSIRO Publishing is a signatory of the STM Permissions Guidelines, however we still request that STM member organisations clear permissions. If you are the author of the material, please refer to your Licence to Publish or Author Contract for information regarding reusing your work.

Permission can be requested through collecting agencies including the Copyright Agency, and the Copyright Clearance Centre. Some journal articles link directly to the CCC Marketplace via a ‘get permission’ link, or you may also contact the agency of your choice. Certain reuses may attract a licence fee or will require a special order request.

If you do not wish to use a collecting agency to clear permissions, please email publishing@csiro.au, clearly stating your intended use and details of the source material.
