Jim Slutz is the executive responsible for leading the coal, oil, and natural gas business lines in the Office of Fossil Energy, including extensive research in areas such as carbon sequestration, reduced emission and high efficiency power generation, ultra deepwater and unconventional natural gas production. He serves as the primary policy advisor to the secretary on fossil energy issues. Jim also oversees the nation’s Strategic Petroleum Reserve. He most recently served as the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Oil and Natural Gas, responsible for administering domestic and international oil and gas programs, including research and development, policy analysis, and natural gas import and export licensing. The oil and natural gas office leads DOE’s LNG program which involves the analysis of safety and other technical issues. Slutz served as the co-chair of the management committee for the National Petroleum Council study, “Facing the Hard Truths About Energy.” Prior to joining DOE, Slutz served in managerial and technical positions in State Government. He holds an MBA degree from The Ohio State University, Fisher College of Business, and a B.S. degree from The Ohio State University, School of Natural Resources.
