Abstract

The Australian Bureau of Statistics collects and publishes a range of data which allows comparisons to be made between industries and over time. The annual Economic Activity and Manufacturing Surveys and Mining Census provide the data from which these comparisons are drawn.

This paper compares the oil and gas extraction industry with the electricity, mining and manufacturing industries, and other major industry groups in the Australian economy in the last five years in terms of

production;

income;

expenses;

profitability; and

employment.

The paper also presents a brief overview of the results of recent ABS surveys covering the use of technology in the Mining and Manufacturing industries.

Looking to future industry activity, the paper presents summary data on:

petroleum exploration expenditure; and

capital expenditure, including expected expenditure.
