Rising to the challenge: how the services sector is preparing for the shift into operations for oil and gas mega-projects

Abstract

While developers of mega oil and gas projects are increasingly looking for the services sector to provide solutions to their capital efficiency challenge during execution, the period of transition to operations represents another significant risk to the ultimate success of the project. As the facilities being developed over the past few years in Australia near completion, the services sector has been preparing to assist its customers successfully transition to operations.

Just as the wave of capital investment in mega oil and gas projects presented a resourcing challenge for the services sector and owners alike, the challenge now moves to providing world-class support during the operations phase. Specifically, the services sector has been preparing to respond to the challenge of addressing the shift in skills sets required by leveraging and transferring expertise developed, tested and proven on existing operating assets to provide these new Australian assets with access to the world’s best capabilities and sufficient skilled resources during operations.

Andrew Wood was appointed Chief Executive Officer effective 23 October 2012. With tenure of more than 20 years with WorleyParsons, and more than 30 years’ experience in the resource and energy industry, Andrew has extensive knowledge across the WorleyParsons group of companies.

His previous roles include: Group Managing Director – Finance/CFO responsible for group-wide direction and support to the business functions of Finance, Information Management, Internal Procurement, and Communications, Legal and Risk; Managing Director for the Australia/New Zealand region; and Managing Director of Mergers and Acquisitions, overseeing 15 business acquisitions including Parsons E&C Corporation in November 2014 and The Colt Companies in March 2007. He was also responsible for WorleyParsons’ early expansion into Thailand and the Middle East, and Canada and Chile in his capacity as Managing Director for International Operations.

Andrew holds a bachelor degree in engineering, and graduate diplomas in financial management and labour management relations. He is also a Fellow of the Institute of Engineers, Australia.
