Primer Review Series

Primer Reviews are concise, authoritative overviews of important contemporary topics in the chemical sciences. They should appeal to advanced undergraduates, the general research chemist who is new to the field, as well as the expert. They provide a solid introduction to the development of a subject, the latest breakthrough results and their implications for the wider scientific community.

Organic radical polymers are being developed for applications such as energy storage, catalysis and spintronics. Quantification of radical content can be nuanced, with a variety of techniques available for characterisation. This primer provides an overview and discusses the challenges of implementation to macromolecules containing pendant radicals. (Image credit: Theo A. Ellingsen.)

In this short primer we will discuss the total synthesis of lysergic acid, an important precursor to lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD). Lysergic acid is also noted as a precursor for many drugs targeting the serotonin receptor family of GPCRs, including multiple known hallucinogens. We will discuss total syntheses containing B, C and D-ring cyclisations as the key step.

This Primer Review is designed to give a succinct overview of the chemistry and pharmacology of psychedelics. It is hoped that it will provide a useful resource for science undergraduates, postgraduates and their instructors, and experienced scientists who require a comprehensive and up-to-date introduction to the field.

CH23015Nonlinear optics: from theory to applications, with a focus on the use of two-photon absorption in biology

Mélanie Dréano, Olivier Mongin 0000-0002-7743-9623, Frédéric Paul 0000-0002-8256-0129 and Mark G. Humphrey 0000-0002-4433-6783
pp. 130-149

Two-photon absorption (2PA) offers several advantages for bio-oriented applications, such as intrinsic three-dimensional resolution and increased penetration depth in biological materials such as tissue. The essential background theory needed for an understanding of 2PA is described, the key experiments to quantify 2PA merit and molecular design to optimise material performance are discussed and the existing challenges in the use of 2PA in imaging, therapy and theranostics are reviewed.
