The metal-metal interaction in binuclear Bis(cyclopentadienyl)titanium(III) halides

Abstract

Measurements of the temperature dependence (80-380 K) of the magnetic susceptibility of polycrystalline bis(η-cyclopentadienyl)titanium(III) halides [(η-Cp)_2- TiX₂Ti(η-Cp)₂] with X = F, Cl, Br, and I are reported. Characteristic singlet-triplet behaviour is observed with the strength of the Ti-Ti d¹-d¹ interaction increasing in the sequence F < Cl ≈ I < Br. The position of I ≈ Cl is unexpected and structural data will be required to resolve this anomaly.
