Abstract

Incidence of 39 plant species was scored at 50 points along a 320 km west-east transect across the Simpson Desert near latitude 26°S. in August 1972. Incidence data alone show previously un- recognized but significant heterogeneity in distributions across the Desert. In further analysis, a process of invasion by plants from eastern and western refuges is indicated, and the possible origins of the flora are discussed. At least one species is invading with increased human activity.
