Changes in face cover of Merino and Corriedale sheep throughout the year

Abstract

Face cover scores were recorded in Merino and Corriedale aged ewes in May, six weeks before lambing, in July, on due date of lambing, and in January, at weaning. There was a significant decrease in face cover score in both breeds from July to January. In each case the major component of the change was seasonal, the effect of lactation being marked in the Merinos but slight in the Corriedales. There was a slight seasonal change in the Merinos from May to July and none in the Corriedales, neither breed showing any effect of pregnancy stress.
