Abstract

Rhinonicteris aurantius represents a monotypic and endemic Australian genus. Records for this species and the results of field observations in 1981 and 1983 are used to describe many known colonies and several new ones. Roost requirements, colony numbers and observed behaviour are used to reassess the status of this species which was previously regarded as widespread and common (Parker 1973). It is now considered that this bat is both rare and vulnerable to further decline.
