Habitat preferences and diets of sympatric Sminthopsis crassicaudata and S. macroura (Marsupialia: Dasyuridae).

Abstract

The habitat preferences of Sminthopsis crassicaudata and S. macroura were examined where the species are sympatric in western Queensland and northwestern New South Wales. At one study area S. macroura appeared to select stony substrates, while S. crassicaudata occurred more commonly on clay, loam or sandy substrates. At the second study area, both species were more commonly caught on clay or loam. The apparent balance between habitat preference and flexibility in usage of habitats is discussed in the light of previous reports on the two species. Some data on diet are presented, showing that both species are broadly insectivorous.
