It is meaningful to understand how Hendra virus can be continuously circulated in the populations of flying foxes, while the virus disappears after only a series of infections in other kinds of species. The population structure of flying foxes was found to have an important role in the viral persistence. This finding can help design appropriate control of flying foxes to prevent Hendra virus infections in horses and in humans.
We tested egg viability of green turtle eggs laid on Raine Island, northern Great Barrier Reef, Australia. We found that green turtle eggs laid at Raine Island have high viability. Hence, the inviable egg at oviposition hypothesis cannot explain the high mortality rate of early-stage embryos that is characteristic of green turtle clutches laid at Raine Island.

Chainsaw carved hollows are widely used in habitat restoration studies, but we know little about their usage by hollow-dependent fauna. We monitored wildlife usage of 150 chainsaw carved hollows in the central west of New South Wales, and found that 21 species entered hollows over a two-year period. Cameras detected eight species breeding inside hollows, whereas physical inspections detected just four species. Hence, the choice of monitoring method can influence estimates of artificial hollow usage by wildlife.
