The female reproductive system is more vulnerable to ageing, and advanced maternal age affects embryo development. Pre-implanted embryos grown in the lab also exhibit ageing like characteristics due to in vitro conditions. We employed cycloastragenol, a naturally occurring substance with reported anti-aging and healing properties, in embryo growth media. Cycloastragenol greatly increased telomerase expression levels, enhanced embryo quality, and increased the embryo’s ability for implantation. We suggest that cycloastragenol might constitute a valuable addition to media used for oocyte maturation and embryo development.

RD22123Redox profile and mediators of the unfolded protein response (UPR) in the placenta of rats during pregnancy

pp. 539-551

Hypoxia, oxidative stress and the unfolded protein response (UPR) pathway are important modulators of placental development. Our findings demonstrated that placental expression of redox and UPR mediators in rats is influenced by gestational age, with higher expression in periods of higher hypoxia and oxidative DNA damage. This study provides for the first time data on the physiological modulation of redox and UPR mediators during placentation in rats.

RD23026Differential expression and localisation of heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) and glutathione peroxidase 5 (GPX5) in the testis and epididymis of Sonid Bactrian camels

Bactrian camels have adapted to desert and semi-desert areas, and provide milk, meat and wool. Until now, our understanding of the expression patterns of the genes in the camel reproductive organs has been extremely limited. HSP70 and GPX5 are genes involved with anti-freezing and antioxidant activity. Our findings indicate that these two genes show spatiotemporal expression specificity in Bactrian camel testis and epididymis. This provides a good starting point for discussion and further research in the camel testis and epididymis.
