Abstract

SUCCESS in achieving our goals for natural ecosystems and rural resources depends on the people responsible for day-to-day management of the resources (primarily farmers) . Their management practices depend on a range of factors, but economic considerations figure prominently. We must allow for these economic motivations when selecting policies aimed at creating a balanced, integrated and sustainable agricultural system. Here I discuss the selection of a set of economic and social policies which will shape the agricultural system in a way which promotes sound management of the natural resources and protection of the environment.
