Abstract

A simple multifactorial model using response surface analysis is developed and described for thermal studies related directly to power station cooling systems. The model incorporates the factors of intake salinity and temperature, temperature shock, exposure time, and mortality responses. In addition sublethal effects such as delayed mortality and incapacitation can be included along with mechanical damage effects. The model is regarded as being flexible enough to apply to the main areas of interest in power station cooling systems: lethal and sublethal effects on entrained species and species in the receiving waters. Experimental results from these areas are presented using the model and are related directly to the field situation.
