Abstract

Empirical observations on filtration in plankton nets have been interpreted in terms of hydrodynamic theory to obtain a better understanding of the filtration process. Filtration coefficient can be calculated with an error of less than 2% by Φn (filtration coefficient) = 1 +0901K, where K is a property of the gauze, dependent on its porosity and Reynolds' number.
