Abstract
This paper gives an insight in the evolution of deep water lifting capabilities on the J-class installation vessels of Jumbo. Two existing methods that are used for recently executed deepwater installation projects are described together with the pros and cons of each system. Based on this comparison, a new concept for installation of heavy structures in ultra deep water is introduced. An in-house analysis campaign has been executed to check the feasibility of this new concept. The first results and discussion of these results are presented at the end of this paper.
After obtaining his Masters Degree in 2003 at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at the Delft University of Technology (Netherlands), Sjoerd Meijer (1978) took on a position with Dutch heavy lift shipping company Jumbo. His passion for the sea combined with an interest in heavy lifting got Sjoerd involved in the development of Jumbo’s Offshore department. During recent years Sjoerd worked as project manager on offshore installation projects, using Jumbo’s fleet of heavy lift vessels. Projects he worked on worldwide include installation of subsea structures, mooring installation and riser installation in ultra deep water. Starting from March 2010 Sjoerd is based in Perth, where he is working on further developing Jumbo Offshore’s business in the Australian and South-East Asian regions. |
Kees Jan Vermeulen is a naval architect at Jumbo Offshore. He holds a Masters degree in engineering and policy analysis and Bachelor in naval architecture from Delft University of Technology. He has worked at the Maritime Research Institute of the Netherlands (MARIN), Ship Hydromechanics Laboratory of the Delft University of Technology and Jumbo Shipping. At Jumbo Shipping he worked as a senior project manager engineering. Presently he is working with Jumbo Offshore as a motion analysis specialist in which function he is responsible for feasibility assessment of new installation concepts and operational workability advice. kjvermeulen@kahn.nl |
Richard L. Krabbendam has a Masters of mechanical engineering from Delft University of Technology and started his career in heavy lift transport and lifting in 1973 with Big Lift of the Netherlands. In 1979 he worked with Mammoet Transport for one year and thereafter for seven years as co-founder/director with ITREC, specialising in engineering of transport and rigging projects. In 1987 he joined Van Seumeren of Holland and in 1989 switched to Jumbo Shipping, where he started a Jumbo Land department, enabling Jumbo to offer a door to door service for heavy lifts. Seven years ago he started to set up Jumbo Offshore and is responsible for the development of special tools, which can be added to Jumbo’s latest addition to their fleet of heavy lift carriers, the J-class. These super heavy lift carriers can integrate heavy transport and installation work in one vessel and use the two 900-tonne Huisman cranes for subsea installation work. rkrabbendam@kahn.nl |
