Abstract

Grazing Merino wethers were given 4 consecutive treatments of lupin seed, alone and with oaten g r a i n , using 2 methods of supplementation: trailing over the ground, and stationary feeder. Intake of lupin seed was estimated from ytterbium (Yb) levels in faeces following 24 h during which seed labelled with Yb acetate was offered. Considerable variation in supplement intake was observed between sheep, whether the supplement was trailed (CV 47%) or offered from a feeder (CV 78% over 3 treatments). This was not associated with initial liveweight and should be considered when rations are being prepared. The Yb acetate marker technique was suitable for measuring intake of supplement under field conditions provided animals can be yarded for faecal collection.
