Abstract
Summary. A modified oesophageal fistula plug made from polyethylene and polyvinylchloride pipe for use in cattle is described. The incorporation of a locking collar with a curvature similar to the area around the fistula combined with the use of a flexible joint filler results in almost no fluid loss from the fistula. These modifications of a split plug design ensure almost complete fluid retention within the oesophagus, a feature that is essential for the accurate estimation of total saliva production in water balance studies with cattle.https://doi.org/10.1071/EA97057
