Abstract

Using single canes in situ as experimental plots a nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium fertilizer trial was applied to six sultana vines. Roots formed on the canes by aerial layering were enclosed in pots to which separate fertilizer treatments were applied during the following growing season. The effects of the fertilizer on fruit and shoot development on the distal side of the pot were observed. Results from this trial were compared with those from an adjacent conventional field trial in which yield increases were obtained with nitrogen. Advantages of the technique for screening fertilizer elements are discussed. It is suggested that similar techniques might be used with advantage on other horticultural plants.
