Abstract

Results from trials with 46 different forage sorghums indicate that the Crooble variety of Sorghum almum and Krish (a selection from a hybrid between S. halepense and S. roxburghii) are superior to all the others in yielding ability and persistence in south-eastern Queensland. All characters investigated in S. almum showed considerable variability, and improvement of some by further breeding and selection should be possible. Palatability and ease of seed identification may be improved by selection following hybridization with perennial sweet sudan grass. No source of resistance to leaf diseases was found in S. almum.
