Variation in Polyphenolic Constituents of Eucalyptus nitens Maiden

Abstract

Two forms of Eucalyptus nitens have been distinguished by applying a simple paper chromatographic technique to leaf tissue suspensions. One form produces a strongly fluorescent chromatographic pattern whereas the other yields a relatively dull chromatogram. The polyphenols responsible for the main strongly fluorescent band were identified as stilbenes. Presence or absence of the stilbenes in the foliage of individual trees was found to be closely related to their provenance. This variation in polyphenolic constituents has also complemented differences in foliage morphology and rate of growth as a basis for differentiating between provenances and for a suggested division of the species into two varieties.
