Abstract
The anatomy and development of cankers on the stems of Acacia mucronata are described. The pathogen is a fungus belonging to the Ascomycetes, and tentatively identified as a member of the heterogeneous family Sphaeriaceae. Estimates of the effects of infection upon water-soluble, methanol-soluble, and ethanol : benzene-soluble extractives in bark and wood are tabulated and discussed. Infection involves an increase in pathological (false) heartwood formation in the diseased stems.
