Abstract
Subterranean clover (Trifolium subterraneurn L. cv. Yarloop) was grown in nutrient solutions which were supplied with 45Ca, 65Zn, or 54Mn either before (series A) or at the same time as (series B) the plants \+ere inoculated with subterranean clover red leaf virus (SCRLV) by means of the aphid vector Acyrthosiphon solani Kltb.SCRLV infection affected the distribution of each isotope, but less in series A than in series B plants. In both series, movement of the isotopes from the petiole (P) into the lamina (L) was retarded. In series B this resulted in a significant decrease in the concentration of 45Ca, 65Zn, or 54Mn in the lamina. The L/P ratios of concentration and the total contents of 65Zn and 54Mn in the leaves of SCRLV-infected plants from both series were also reduced. In addition SCRLV infection reduced the 54Mn concentration in the distal third more than in the remainder of the lamina.
SCRLV infection increased the dry weight of the lamina and/or the LIP ratio of dry weight of the younger leaves of the series B plants.
