Abstract

In a series of field trials, the non-volatile nematicides ethoprophos, fenamiphos, fensulfothion, oxamyl, aldicarb, UC21865, CGA12223, AC64475, triazphos and chlorpyrifos applied in a 0.6 m band at rates of 1.0 to 16.8 kg a.i. ha-1 were compared with EDB row treatment applied at 36 kg a.i, ha-1 for control of the root-knot nematode (Meloidogyne javanica) in tobacco. None of the compounds was more consistently effective than ethylene dibromide. Seedbeds were also treated with fenamiphos granules at 120 kg a.i, ha-1 but this failed to give the seedlings any protection against nematode attack after transplanting into untreated soil. A controlled release polymer mixed with fenamiphos did not improve nematode control at the end of the season when compared with fenamiphos alone.
