Abstract

A Xanthomonas sp. was isolated from a bacterial streak disease of Japanese millet Echinochloa crus-galli var. frumentacea leaves. The isolates were found to be distinct from two isolates of X. holcicola on the basis of comparative biochemical tests and pathogenicity on the gramineous hosts wheat, barley, oats, rye, prairie grass (Bromus unioloides), sorghum, and maize. The Japanese millet organism was identified as X. translucens. Host studies also indicated that the organism could be a race of X. translucens f. sp. cerealis.
