Abstract

Some effects of gamma radiation and subsequent storage at 68°F and/or 45°F on Tasmanian Up-to-date, Kennebec, Sebago, and Sequoia potatoes were investigated in 1961 and 1962. In all cases sprouting was prevented for at least six months by the minimum doses given : 5000 rads for the Up-to-date, Sebago and Sequoia tubers, and 10,000 rads for the Kennebec tubers. Six months after harvest the majority of the irradiated tubers were commercially sound, except for the Kennebec variety. Tubers stored at 45°F were in a better condition than those stored at 68°F. Irradiated potatoes lost less weight but, in all varieties except Kennebec, had a slightly increased tendency to rot. Changes in specific gravity were variable.
