The use of the chisel plough and improved pastures for controlling serrated tussock (Nassella trichotoma)

Abstract

The efficiency of five chisel plough treatments in killing mature serrated tussock (Nasseila trichotoma (Nees.) Hack.) was measured. Treatments with three ploughings were most successful but did not remove all tussocks. Reinfestation of seedling tussocks was highest in the most thoroughly prepared seedbeds and lowest in the least prepared. Improved species, when spelled during spring and summer, smothered some mature tussock and a high proportion of seedling tussock. Of five improved species sown, the establishment of two, Trifolium repens L. and Phalaris tuberosa L. was affected by the thoroughness of seedbed preparation.
