A taxonomic revision of the Pharyngostrongylinea Popova (Nematoda : Strongyloidea) from macropodid marsupials

Abstract

The nematode tribe Pharyngostrongylinea Popova, 1952 is revised. Thirty-five nematode species are recognized from 24 host species : all hosts are members of the marsupial subfamily Macropodinae. The genera recognized are: Pharyngostrongylus Yorke & Maplestone, 1926, Rugopharynx Mönnig, 1927, Pararugopharynx Magzoub, 1964, Spirostrongylus Yorke & Maplestone, 1926, Cyclostrongylus Johnston & Mawson, 1939, Parapharyngostrongylus gen. nov., Rugostrongylus gen. nov. and Thylostrongylus gen. nov. Valid species of Pharyngostrongylus recognized are: P. macropodis Yorke & Maplestone, 1926, P. eta Johnston & Mawson, 1939, P. gamma Johnston & Mawson, 1939, P. iota Johnston & Mawson, 1939, P. kappa Mawson, 1965, P. lambda Mawson, 1965 and P. ornatus Davey & Wood, 1938. The following species are described as new: P. dendrolagi, sp. nov., P. nelsoni, sp. nov., P. diversus, sp. nov., P. papillatus, sp. nov., P. setosus, sp. nov., and P. sharmani, sp. nov. The genus Parapharyngostrongylus is described as new, with a single species P. dentatus, sp. nov. The genus Rugostrongylus is described as new, with a single species R. labiatus (Davey & Wood, 1938), comb. nov. (= Macropostrongylus labiatus Davey & Wood, 1938). The genus Thylostrongylus is described as new, with two species: T. parvus, sp. nov., and T. tasmaniensis, sp. nov. Valid species of Rugopharynx recognized are: R. australis (Mönnig, 1926), R. delta (Johnston & Mawson, 1939), R. epsilon (Johnston & Mawson, 1939), R. rosemariae Beveridge & Presidente, 1978, R. rufogrisea Magzoub, 1964, R. theta (Johnston & Mawson, 1939), R. zeta (Johnston & Mawson, 1939). R. longibursaris (Kung, 1948) is reinstated as a valid species, and R. omega, sp. nov., is described, having been confused in the past under the name R. zeta. The genus Pararugopharynx Magzoub, 1964, with its single species P. protemnodontis Magzoub, 1964, is redescribed. The genus Spirostrongylus Yorke & Maplestone, 1926 is redescribed; description of the adult and fourth-stage larva of the only species, S. spirostrongylus, confirms the position of the genus in the Pharyngostrongylinea. The genus Cyclostrongylus Johnston & Mawson, 1939 is redefined. Species recognized as valid are: C. wallabiae Johnston & Mawson, 1939, C. kartana (Mawson, 1955), C. parma (Johnston & Mawson, 1939), C. leptos (Mawson, 1965). The following new species are described: C. alatus, sp. nov., C. elegans, sp. nov., and C. perplexus, sp. nov. C. gallardi Johnston & Mawson, 1939 is excluded from the genus.
