Abstract

The usual estimator of age in Macropodidae is the pattern of molar eruption obtained by direct observation. The pattern of molar progression anteriorly with age is compared in captive agile wallabies, Macropus agilis. The latter required X-rays of the skull, but improved the precision of estimation by about 21%. The two patterns are shown to be linearly related even though they differ between sexes.
