Abstract
A review of the methods of determining magnetic field parameters in astrophysical situations is presented. The role of radio observations is only briefly discussed because of recent review coverage, but a more detailed description is given of the optical and infrared polarisation produced by aligned dust grains, with particular reference to the relation between the grain alignment direction and the ambient magnetic field. Some recent results are outlined.https://doi.org/10.1071/PH920569
