Abstract
An examination of the limiting precision with which a scanning optical interferometer can be pointed on a fringe peak is described. The interferometer uses photoelectric detection and it is shown that the principal noise sources limiting the accuracy of detection are the shot noise in the vacuum photocell and the photon noise from the light source.https://doi.org/10.1071/PH620194
