Abstract

In summary, it was found that the percentage of the estimated total number of Aboriginal mothers reported to the MDC rose from 58.7 to 64.8 per cent over the five year period 1994-1998. Reporting was better in rural hospitals than urban hospitals: it is estimated that in 1998 47.0 per cent of births to Aboriginal mothers in urban hospitals were correctly reported as Aboriginal compared to 85.6 per cent in rural hospitals, though there was a trend towards improved reporting in both urban and rural hospitals over the five year period.
