Abstract

Two subspecies, which have rumps of different colours, are sympatric in some areas at the base of Cape York Peninsula. Interbreeding occurs in one area but not in others. The black-rumped form appears to be extending its range. P. c. atropygialis was studied in detail near Mareeba, where it was found in small flocks and nested in colonies. The distribution, loca- tion and structure of nests are described. Breeding behaviour is similar to that of the Long-tailed Finch P. acuticauda.
