Nesting of the Superb Lyrebird in Sherbrooke Forest, Victoria

Abstract

The results of a study of nesting lyrebirds Menura novaehollandiae in Sherbrooke Forest, Victoria, from 1958 to 1965 are summarized. Nest construction, entirely by the female, and nest-sites are described. The incubation period is probably about 45 days; the nestling period, observed once as 43 days, is discussed. The normal period of egg-laying is in the last half of June and during July, and could be influenced by rainfall and falling temperature. Mention is made of territories, and it is shown that the male is fully aware of the nest-site and will defend it. Destruction of nests by neighbouring females is recorded and discussed. The total breeding success is shown as 63 per cent.
