GEOROOTS ? early geophysical prospecting in Australia

Abstract

The introduction of geophysical prospecting in Australia followed a predictable sequence of events. The science was developed overseas where the need for it had been demonstrated and early successes were reported in professional journals. These reports aroused the interest of local geologists and mining experts and a general consensus developed that it would be a good thing to try it out under Australian conditions, so long as someone else paid for it ! The obvious target was the Government so it is not perhaps surprising that the first serious effort to try out the new methods was Government financed.
