Reconnaissance "magnetic logging" of diamond drill cores from the Sydney Basin, New South Wales

Abstract

Results of "magnetic logging" of 1.97 km of diamond drill core from Permian-Triassic rocks of the Sydney Basin have indicated the potential usefulness of this technique in stratigraphic correlation studies. The "magnetic stratigraphy" (which represents time horizons) determined from this reconnaissance investigation has complemented earlier conclusions that at least some of the lithologic units (or contacts) in the Triassic Narrabeen Group are time-transgressive. Considerable additional data need to be accumulated before the magnetic data provides a complete section through the Sydney Basin. This investigation has not clarified the (time-)boundaries of the 'Kiaman Magnetic Interval', a term which needs more formal definition (or perhaps abandonment).
