Maggie Aulsebrook completed her Ph.D. studies at Monash University in 2017, conducting research in the area of luminescent lanthanide chemosensors. Following this, she worked as a post-doctoral research fellow at Chimie ParisTech in the development of zirconium-89 radiotracers for applications in PET imaging. Maggie then took up a position at ANSTO as a radiochemist where she is involved in the development of the next generation of nuclear medicines for the diagnosis and therapy of human diseases. |
Leena Hogan is a radiochemist at ANSTO whose research focuses on the development, separation, purification, and formulation of new radioisotopes for use in medical, environmental, and industrial applications. Concurrently, Leena is completing her Ph.D. studies with the University of Sydney, developing bifunctional chelators for gallium-68. Leena also has experience in commercial research, having worked on the optimisation of sol-gel encapsulation technology for Ceramisphere. |
Lidia Matesic completed her Ph.D. in medicinal chemistry in 2011 at the University of Wollongong under the supervision of Associate Professor Danielle Skropeta, before commencing at ANSTO as a post-doctoral fellow. During her research career, she has focussed on the development of radiotracers for cancer and neurological disorders. She specialises in the radiolabelling of small molecules, peptides, and biomolecules for projects with academia and industry. Lidia was awarded a HOPE Fellowship from Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (2017) and was the inaugural recipient of the RACI Rita Cornforth Lectureship (2017). |

Abstract
Australia has a rich and long history in the nuclear science and technology sector. Nuclear medicine involves the use of radioactive substances and molecular imaging equipment to diagnose and treat diseases and is an ever-growing field around the globe. In fact, it is estimated that one in two Australians will require a nuclear medicine procedure during their lifetime. Progress by Australian scientists during the 21st century in radioisotope production, radiochemistry methodology, and radiotracer development for applications in nuclear medicine is reviewed. These developments will allow facile access to the next generation of nuclear medicines for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes.
